The word “hypnosis” originates from the Greek word Hypnos, which means sleep.  However, hypnosis is not sleep.  It is internal focusing, in which you are completely relaxed, but you are not asleep.  Although you are in a relaxed state of mind, you are still able to think, speak, and respond to suggestions.

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that everyone experiences.  It occurs at least twice a day, when crossing over into sleep and when waking up in the morning.  Many of us have experienced it when we have driven down the highway and suddenly realized we have passed our exit.  When you become so deeply absorbed in a book or movie that you don’t notice what is going on around you, you are in hypnosis.  Daydreaming is a form of self-hypnosis.

The conscious mind (which is our analytical, outer mind) can typically only hold seven to ten bits of information at a time.  However, the subconscious mind (our creative, inner mind) has an unlimited capacity, and it is who we really are.  It contains all of our beliefs, values, and habits which are formed as a result of our experiences.  Some of these beliefs and habits can be limiting and hold us back.  A hypnotist can guide another to help bypass the conscious mind to reach the subconscious mind and implement the desired change.  This is similar to a person taking a bypass on a freeway to get to their destination quicker.  In hypnosis we are putting to work that part of the mind that we have used unconsciously.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis, and the client is always in control.   The hypnotist serves as a guide, coach or teacher, using suggestions that can help you achieve your goals and take control of your life.
